Oakland’s Nectar Social Club hopes to be the new model for queer spaces

My Oakland restaurant was broken into 3 times last year. Love for the neighborhood is why I stay “It was gut-wrenching. It was scary. I had this hopeless feeling because it was the first time we’d experienced three break-ins back to back in the same year.”

We had way more food than pictured including the vindaloo meatballs, made with Impossible meat which was the only meat substitute on the menu and the Shrikhand Cheesecake came topped with a blueberry saffron compote. But there were some items I had never had before that really stood out for me.
Dahi Wada urada dal fritters, chilled yogurt and any one of the 5 chutneys that are offered: Nagi, Minth Cilantro, Tamarind date, mango chutney and coconut chutney.
The decor and the dishes were specialized for the restaurant adding the cutest touches.
Drunken Pani Puri semlina puffs, chaat potatoes. The interesting part was pouring lemon tamarind water mixed with mint and gin.
Maska Paneer house made cheese, spiced spinach sauce, garam masala and sild chili oil.
The museum next door had some amazing rooms full of art that rotates. The Minnesota Street project also has a climate controlled art storage and transportation services for which would work for artists who don’t have a lot of space or studios.
