Foodventure: Copas 2223 Market St, San Francisco, CA 94114
Shout out to “the coven” sister Ashley Reddy for the invite. This was a Foodventure to remember. Not only because I was able to enjoy an abundance of delectable food. But there was a community to share it with and that made it all the more special.
Co -founders Jessica Kapoor and Julio Aguilera opened what they’re calling their “neighborhood Mexican California eatery for everyone”. On the edge of The Castro district, sits Copas. When you walk in you are greeted with art from local artists and photographers as well as Aguilar himself while he was living in Oaxaca.
The restaurant is spacious and feels like someplace to sip their Pinche Paloma a house drink of grapefruit kombucha, tequila and lime with a salted rim.
Or possibly you want to try Oro Ranchero made with Mezcal, pineapple, chile pasilla liqueur, spices, dry Curacao and Benedictine. I had to ask what it was because it had honeyed thickness. Its a French liquore added for sweetness. This tasted like I could soothe summertime woes.
The restaurant has been re-envisioned from what was featured in the 2022 Forbes piece. The owners said they took some time to close their doors and rethink the menu. I hadn’t been to the restaurant before but this felt like an elevated meal with accessibility.
I enjoyed that there was an honor in the service and attention to the small details and where Kapoor’s background in the hospitality industry at Saison Hospitality showed up. At one point, Jessica came over to provide us new menus because there was an error that none of us were even aware of. But she noticed and that was when I understood the connection around dining integrity and service that has been reemerging.
Below are some pics of what we enjoyed. Not everything is pictured because I was busy enjoying the company and the food:
