The Soul Collection
I’m on vacation but of course the collection souls by way of stories doesn’t rest.
The Bus driver
On the 15 minute ride from the airport to the cruise line boarding location at the Port of Miami, the driver was a former professional football player by the name of Ronald, told tall tales along mingled with mini tourist facts.
Along the ride he pointed out that there were millions of people in the city of Miami. Of those millions he took a moment to remind everyone of their privilege and how to be grateful for the moments that brought us to the opportunity to afford a vacation.
He also mentioned that the loudest voices of negativity are in the minority of population. "There are people who believe every single one of us [Black and brown people] need to pack up and move out of here. They are wrong. Let's not continue to let the minority make us not believe we belong. "
It was a good message to head on what would be the melting pot in the form of a cruise ship. I would have conversations from people who would spend 7 days crossing paths with people that either would become life long friends or we would never see again."We're all as one. All we have to do is respect one another and love one another."
By the pool
I was minding my own business with my feet in the pool. He was celebrating his grandmother’s 90th birthday with his family members. He began the conversation asking “What's a beautiful girl like you doing out here without a man?” This story isn’t going where you think it is.
His opening line was also his admission to letting me know that he could see up my skirt and he mentioned it because’s he a gentleman. The conversation wasn’t over there. So much weird shit has been happening as of late that I didn’t process how to respond for a moment. So I did what I normally did— I listened because there was always something more that I needed to hear.
The mental processing took long enough to for him to continue his tale. His girlfriend of 2 years left him and according to him he was “very good to her and her two kids”. Then he proceeded to talk about how some girls look older than they are and deepened the confirmation that not only do creepy men roam the world freely, they are more brazen than you think.
Fortunately my older brother showed up, interrupted and deflected the conversation.
