Questlove has told the tale many times that he can not look Erykah Badu in the eyes. I’ve watched her perform over the years and I can understand why.
My first time seeing Badu perform was at little women driven music festival in 1998— The Lilith Faire. With high head wraps and incense burning, she sang to a mostly white audience of women who were memorized by her every movement.
I’ve actually sung “Pick yo afro” to an ex because his afro was unruly and chaotic, not just flat on one side.
On my way home from Italy last year, I saw the green eyed Badu in a Canadian airport. In place and out, I saw her as I was rushing to get to my flight. There was that fandom anxiousness that wanted to ask her for a photo but the logical human of me saw she was being escorted by an attendant, who was also a fan.
Badu began her "Unfollow Me" tour on June 11 in San Antonio, TX at AT&T Center. Just knowing that she is heading to the Bay Area on June 21st at Chase Center, means that her magic is near.
It means that I may get to relive that moment in 2018 when she didn’t hit the stage until midnight on a Wednesday to a standing room only crowd at the Warfield. The room was filled with smoke. Thundercat thrashed. A craving for drive through fast food came over me and I knew I had to work in the morning.
But this was the concert junkie life I had chosen. I knew where I was supposed to be. I’m hoping once again to avoid her hypnotic green eyed gaze.
