Hotel Kimpton -Alton hosts poetry series
National Poetry Month series AND I got to see the rooms
The month of April brings the celebration of National Poetry Month. The Kimpton Alton in San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf was host to The Living Room series. Founded by Kevin Dublin in 2021, the fiscally sponsored monthly poetry reading series brings the poetry to the people. Dublin explained during his introduction that the purpose is to close the gap in understanding and experiencing poetry.
Visitors were treated to a readings from a long list of impressive poets including Oakland poet Laureate Ayodele Nzinga, MK Chavez, Antony Fangary, Sabina Khan-Ibarra and Landon Smith to name a few. This was especially great for visitors to San Francisco to experience local poets and get some new books without having to search.
I had always been curious about the hotel. After the reading, I was curious and couldn’t resist asking to see the rooms.
Each room has a robe for visitors and a Victrola record player. Record Lending Library at the front desk has an eclectic selection of vinyl to choose from.
The hotel is offering ways to be connected to local community starting with a collaboration with Oakland’s plant boutique Blk Girls Greenhouse, transforming one of the rooms into The Sanctuary Suite, an oasis of comfort complete with greenery and products made from local vendors.
On Earth Day April 22, the hotel also launched Kimpton Plant Pals program in collaboration with Plant Kween, a Black queer influencer who specializes in plants. Guests of the hotel can have a plant delivered to their room to add some lushness to their stay. There’s a lending library provided by City Light Books.
All of the amenities the Kimpton -Alton has updated are refreshing to see from a local hotel and I'm curious to see what else they have in store.
One thing for certain—seeing one of the deep-seated bathtub made me think of all the possibilities for a city kid staycation in Fisherman’s Wharf.
