Foodventure
Slutty Vegan 1542 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd SW, Atlanta GA
Foodventures to highly popularized places can be hit or miss. Atlanta based Slutty Vegan is one of those places where its at least worth trying in order to determine the hype is deserved. Depending on your expectations, it can go either way.
The burger joint that started as a food truck has received much fan fare for it’s founder Aisha “Pinky” Cole. She’s also the author of the vegan cookbook “Eat Plants, B*tch” and “I Hope You Fail: Ten Hater Statements Holding You Back from Getting Everything You Want.”
Truthfully, I wasn’t really following the journey for Slutty Vegan or the owner too closely, but I knew it was a destination food location while in Atlanta. It wasn’t even until recently that I learned about lawsuit for unpaid wages in one of its New York location. She’s also a judge on Revolt TV’s “Bet on Black.”
When we arrived there was line was out the door, some for pick up and others who had yet to order. It seemed like the line to order was moving faster than the pick up line.
Upon entry the cashier yelled “Hey Slut” as a greeting. After placing an order, rather than standing in the confined space if a customer chooses to leave the building there would be a voice over the loud speaker yelling “Slut out the door”.
The cashier put on his best ATL accent extra thick with sprinkles of “Shawty” but the code switch dropped when he was being asked a question about the food options.
All for items were named something provocative, a trend that I noticed in more than one restaurant in Atlanta.
I ordered Ménage à Trois, an Impossible patty with vegan bacon, vegan shrimp, vegan cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato, and “Slut Sauce” on a vegan Hawaiian bun.
The fried pickles were better than the slutty fries. Tempura-ish breading coating on the briny pickle was pretty sustainable and stayed pretty crisp for a while through the to go transport. Most of the food didn’t transport well.
While the fries were a disappointment, dipping them in BlackBerry Mayo was life changing.
This wasn’t the first time I having plant based burgers so at this point I didn’t feel like I was having anything truly original. If I’m ever back in Atlanta or maybe another city, I’d try it again when there are less busy circumstances and see if that makes a difference.
I appreciated the honesty of this! So hard to find with reviews these days. I've never had Slutty Vegan but follow her career a lot because I'm interested in successful Black businesswomen and their paths.
