Not intentionally but I happened upon the experience and the importance of listening.
I’ve interviewed a lot of people and the biggest lesson that I can learn (and teach) is that listening to people made me hear them better.
Hearing and listening are not the same thing. Not everyone gets to learn that skill and not everyone wants to. Someone thought I needed that lesson. Whether they're right or wrong about my needs, I'm sure everyone learned to listen better in the end.
When you listen to people talk, you not only learn that similar words, pronunciations and tonality change the meaning of the word but the interpretation of an entire phrase or sentence.
You can hear the person and their intentions coming through. They will tell you what they mean. When you listen to people talk, you can also hear them when they ask for what they want.
The only way to hear people is to LISTEN to people. Not nod your head and agree or hum-sigh when you don't understand. Really listen. It's hard, I know.
But there's a reward in it, for better or worse. It may not be your reward but it can be if you're petty enough.
You just have to stop talking long enough to hear them
The crux of it all is—Words mean things.
Amen to this! I think I have become a better listener by watching my dog. He reads movements like language.
